6/4/2016 Update

Sandy is enjoying her summer, We recently went for her first swim. She loves the water, loves swimming and splashing. Sandy has completed her treatment and is now clear.

4/26/2016 Update

As of 4/22/2016 Sandy has started her antibiotic treatment for  Lyme and Ehrlichia . Once Sandy completes her treatment, she will be considered CLEAR but will always test positive for both. She remains her usual couch potato self until I grab my baseball cap, she now knows that means we are going to the dog park to play ball. I have taken some pictures of her in action! Check them out in her gallery. This girl was born to please; whether is cuddling in bed on a lazy Sunday, a morning jog, or all out fun chasing tennis balls at the dog park; Sandy is ready to do so.

Meet Sandy, she is a sweet, loving, and loyal girl whose first seven years of life were spent outside with her brother guarding a business’ yard. Sandy now has the chance at a normal life.

Despite being an outside dog for many years, Sandy has quickly acclimatized herself to the indoor life, after only a couple of days and a strict schedule, she is now house broken. She does great in the crate, but she free roams my house. Sandy can go from a total couch potato to ready to take on the world as soon as she walks through the doorway or sees a squirrel. Sandy has a very healthy prey drive and her herding instincts are off the charts. While she won’t herd her young human foster siblings, she does herd her much younger foster sibling Leo, especially when he runs circles around her at the dog park. I am not certain whether she was leash trained or not, but her leash manners are splendid, she sometimes needs a correction while on the trail to remind her that people on bicycles are not a threat and that just because squirrel friend is running, it doesn’t mean it wants to play tag. Sandy’s favorite activities include napping on her comfy bed or by my side, she loves going on long walks and playing fetch or her version “fetch” which usually means she makes the tennis ball stop bouncing and/or runs around with it. In my house, Sandy gets along with my dog Leo who is 30 pounds heavier but, for the most part, prefers and sometimes demands to be petted.

So overall, Sandy is a great companion and match with someone who has the time to spend with her and to explore her new found freedom. Sandy can live with other dogs but will prefer to be the only pet. Because of her prey drive and herding instincts being so high, I do not feel comfortable having her around small dogs or pets, children are OK.
