German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) : : Female (spayed) : : Adult
Meet Jenna! She is 94 pounds of GSD love who likes to give kisses freely and rolls over for belly rubs on a dime. Jenna is a purebred, black and cream female about 5 years old. Jenna is from the Roanoke area and she was previously owned by a very nice elderly couple who made the tough decision to surrender her to VGSR when they realized she was a bit too energetic for them.
Jenna grew up an only dog running free on a 20 acre farm, sleeping in a large outdoor shed. She knows sit and lie down and, surprisingly for an outdoor dog, is potty trained. She is very smart and loves, loves, loves people - all people big and little. She rides well in the car and does well on and off leash. She responds very well to voice corrections, likes to walk right by your side, and just wants to please her human. Oh and she snores, big snores. While asleep she will turn over on her back, spread her legs out and saw some logs. She is a funny, funny girl.
While Jenna was much loved, she did not receive the proper diet and has between 10-15 more pounds to lose for her optimal health. She is now on a high-quality grain-free diet and is taking morning and evening walks, runs, and hour long hikes to build up her stamina and help her shed the weight. Jenna loves to move and is always excited when I pick up her leash. She is now up to running 3 miles after only 2 weeks of consistent effort - yay! She does get a little tired, but her will is to be active and I think she is naturally an energetic dog. She is old enough to be a couch potato inside, but likes to be out and about and on the go outside. Her coat has started to take on amazing shine and Jenna get compliments everywhere we go. At goal weight, Jenna is going to be absolutely gorgeous.
Aside from being overweight, Jenna is super healthy - no heart worms or parasites. She is spayed. We even had the vet check her thyroid and blood levels and all is very good.
Jenna is very obedient to people and has a gentle disposition toward all humans. At present, she does seem to want to be top dog at home which can cause issues if you have an insecure resident dog. She is adjusting well to living indoors and enjoys soft rugs and beds. She loves chewies and all toys. I do believe Jenna may be best as a solo dog. If a second dog, she will need a lot of work, effort, and time poured into helping her learn proper boundaries with another pet. I think Jenna needs someone with breed experience who will be a firm, but gentle pack leader. She also needs someone dedicated to her weight loss. We want Jenna to be with us as long as possible and her current weight will most certainly lead to serious joint and health issues in only a few short years.
This sweet girl is an absolute diamond in the rough!
