Ruger arrived into the rescue on 1/24/15 and I've spent the last few days getting to know this wonderful boy. Before I get into his personality, here are the basics:
Age: 1 year, 2 months

Ruger is a gorgeous, happy, healthy, playful one year old GSD with a very out going personality. He is one of the most loving and affectionate dogs I have ever met. He has no clue that he's a big boy and acts like a lap dog. Ruger LOVES to cuddle/nuzzle and will lay on your lap and plop himself down all over you. He is an absolute puppy with unbelievable energy and a super high need for exercise and mental stimulation. He loves running, jumping, playing fetch, exploring, playing games, and working for affection, praise, or treats. I have never seen a more agile GSD ever. He is incredibly light on his feet and is nothing short of beautiful when he runs and jumps. He effortlessly jumps great heights with total grace. If his good looks weren't already magnificent, his energy, spirit, and personality are equally striking.
Ruger is house trained, but is still young and needs frequent potty breaks. He needs work on his manners, but he's eager to learn and very smart. He doesn't have the best leash manners, but we're working on that. He needs various types of exercise. An ideal adopter would provide him with daily: 1) unstructured exercise - where he can run fast and get a lot of energy out (in very large yard or park off leash); 2) structured exercise - like at least two long daily walks where he is under control, and; 3) games/mental stimulation - besides just playing fetch and other games, he would benefit greatly from a job or something he's trained to do. Whether it be agility training or search and rescue training, this dog has a strong working drive.
Again, this boy is super loving and is very much a velcro dog that will follow you everywhere. He has a sweet temperament and no food aggression at all. He's had limited exposure to other animals, but has met 2 dogs since he's lived with me and had no problems. He also gets along great with my own GSD. However, he wants to constantly play and never gets tired, which may be overwhelming to some dogs. He also is the type to chase squirrels, birds, etc., so you have to be careful about him getting away or jumping (short) fences.
If you're looking for a dog with protective instincts, Ruger may not be for you. He loves everyone he meets and does not exhibit typical GSD protective behaviors, barking, etc. He's just a total love bug. If you're alone with him he will constantly bring you a ball or toy to throw for him. If there's another dog around, he will be constantly trying to play and might even be a bit antagonizing if the other dog slows down at all. He responds well to correction, but needs lots of structure and positive reinforcement. He very much wants to please, and punishment should never be used with him.
I think Ruger will eventually be just fine in a home with very young children, but at this point he may be too rambunctious. Although, a very experienced GSD owner who is truly dedicated to providing Ruger with the proper training, structure, exercise, and love should be able to manage that situation.
Ruger is a fantastic dog and deserves the best forever family possible. If you work all day long and there's no one home, he's not the dog for you.
