This is Lena, one of the sweetest dogs I’ve encountered. She arrived as a stray rescue from North Carolina. And she came with a surprise…two of her puppies whom VGSR was glad to find homes. It was then I decided to name her Lena. To be honest, imagining the characteristics of stray dogs, doesn’t often bring about the best of thoughts. Lena shows none of the negative behaviors that you might expect. The first thing you’ll notice when meeting Lena for the first time is how affectionate she is. Lena is low energy, loves toys, is house broken, and would be perfect in any kind of dwelling. She knows basic commands but she can act aloof while on the leash. She never shows aggression to adults or children and is never destructive. I take Lena to Reston’s dog park every day, almost religiously. While sometimes solitary, she will run and play with the others of all sizes. Indoors She presents almost as if she were an “old soul” already familiar with dog life, despite being only two years old. Lena tested positive for heartworm and is now completing her final treatment. You would never know it by looking at her. Lena has been strong, she is a healer, and she’ll even heal you too. Looking back, I remember thinking what it means to give a dog a name. While I was struggling to try and come up with something, I missed the whole point…a name means that someone wants you, even loves you. Lena is very worthy companion…whatever you call her.
