We have had Roxy two weeks now, and in that time we have learned a lot about her. She is a great houseguest, obeys commands, does not chew and gracefully goes into her crate at night. Roxy is a very high-energy 2-year-old, agile and fast. She has a high prey-drive. She rolled over our 80 lb., 5-year-old Shepherd without a problem; quite a challenge as Roxy is still only 54 lbs.! She definitely wants to be top-dog, and with that in mind I would like Roxy to go to a home where there are no small dogs or cats, I must say that Roxy is wonderful with all children. Roxy will try her luck at times but stops when a firm no command is issued. I believe that Roxy needs an owner who has previous GSD experience and is prepared to give Roxy lots of love. Her humans are the most important thing in her life; she is very loyal. Roxy is a really sweet young girl, full of energy and love. Head scratches are the order of the day. She love to play ball and run with our GS girl in the garden. Roxy is such a special dog, very trusting, very obedient, lots of energy and very agile, quite amazing given that she has only been with us since Thursday and had been in a shelter for two weeks. Roxy suffers from EPI which means she lacks the enzyme to help digest food and is underweight by about 7 lb., which she lost while in the shelter. We have her on an enzyme powder supplement and she should start to pick up weight within the week. She walks great on the lead and knows the sit, stay, down commands and will give you a paw when asked. She has a tendency to jump up at you which we are working on. A firm no stops her immediately. She is a very street smart girl but knows her boundaries, is friendly with other dogs but likes to test her position in the pack and is good with chidren. VGSR can only adopt dogs out in the Virginia/Maryland/DC area, no exceptions.

Although donations of all types are needed, our primary need is foster homes for our lovely dogs while they wait for their new family to find them. Fostering is an extremely rewarding experience. Vet care is paid for by our rescue, and we can even provide you with food. All YOU need to add is love and security.

The adoption process starts with the applicant filling out the adoption application. This can happen at any time during the process, before or after having met a GSD that might be the ideal companion. (It's an advantage to have a pre-approved application on file with VGSR. It should be stressed here that being pre-approved does not mean that any potential adopter can select any available dog at will and take that dog home immediately. VGSR will exercise its best judgement as to which GSD will be the best match for that specific adopter based on a number of qualifying criteria. Many GSDs that come to us are matched up with their new people very quickly because their people have been pre-approved.) The applicant then submits the application form with a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee. VGSR reviews the application, then schedules an interview and home visit during which a number of questions are asked and the home is reviewed to be sure there is a contained/safe yard, and to meet the family involved. Once the application is approved, the applicant is asked to submit a $250.00 donation to VGSR, and the adoption is completed.
