About Gertrude

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Ear Type: Natural/Uncropped
Gertrude is a sweet, female GSD that was taken to animal control when she was picked up as a stray. The animal control was / is keeping all of the big dogs outside despite the heat. She was covered with fleas, ticks and has numerous fly bites on her ears. When I first met her she had the saddest eyes. Gertrude was immediately taken to the vet who estimated her age at 4-6 years. Despite the conditions she was in he gave her a great bill of health. It is apparent she was used for breeding and also has had a lot of training. She knows sit, stay, lie down, and is very obedient. Her front teeth have been worn down. The vet said this was attributed to her having had a hard life in the past. After the vet, she went straight to the doggie wash and was treated with the works. She is absolutely a gorgeous, sweet GSD. She is very dignified and has the best manners. She gets along with her foster sister and both of her foster brothers. All of the staff at the vet and doggie wash gave her rave reviews at her behavior and all agree she is a beautiful girl. My guess is that she was used for breeding, kept in crate most of her life and then was discarded. The first day I put her in the crate when I left for work. When I came home, I was greeted at the door by Gertrude. The second day she managed to get out again. I have come to realize that Gertrude really doesnt like the crate but will go in it and does well if she is in a room with her foster siblings. I discovered this when I moved her crate. She also does very well in an open home and loves her doggie bed. She is very laid back, and is content to lie quietly at your feet. I really want Gertrude to finally enjoy her life and get pampered as she deserves. I am happy to say that she now has a sparkle in her eye. She an absolute great GSD and would be a treasure to any family. Although donations of all types are needed, our primary need is foster homes for our lovely dogs while they wait for their new family to find them. Fostering is an extremely rewarding experience. Vet care is paid for by our rescue, and we can even provide you with food. All YOU need to add is love and security.

The adoption process starts with the applicant filling out the adoption application. This can happen at any time during the process, before or after having met a GSD that might be the ideal companion. (It's an advantage to have a pre-approved application on file with VGSR. It should be stressed here that being pre-approved does not mean that any potential adopter can select any available dog at will and take that dog home immediately. VGSR will exercise its best judgement as to which GSD will be the best match for that specific adopter based on a number of qualifying criteria. Many GSDs that come to us are matched up with their new people very quickly because their people have been pre-approved.) The applicant then submits the application form with a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee. VGSR reviews the application, then schedules an interview and home visit during which a number of questions are asked and the home is reviewed to be sure there is a contained/safe yard, and to meet the family involved. Once the application is approved, the applicant is asked to submit a $200.00 donation to VGSR, and the adoption is completed.
