About Tara

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Ear Type: Natural/Uncropped
Tara is a beautiful, spayed girl, VERY tall, weighing in at 110 pounds. She has a relatively short coat (no undercoat). My vet says she has healthy hips. Shes an indoor dog, perfectly house-trained, with free run of the house all day while Im at work. She doesnt chew, dig, jump fences or bark excessively. She asks to go out into my fenced backyard, and has never tried to escape. Tara gets along fine with my bossy 10-year-old Lhasa and 4 cats. I have an indoor rabbit and guinea pig, and shes never bothered their cage. Taras only flaw is that she bullies my other (older) big dog. I would never give her up otherwise. I walk her using Halti-headcollar, as she is somewhat excitable when meeting strange dogs; but she will heel, sit, lie down and stay. A friends whippet-mix visited for a week, and Tara ignored this smaller dog. She should be the only BIG dog in a home, as size seems to trigger dominance issues. On our walks, she may start after a strange cat if it runs; but accepts correction, and wont chase one who stands its ground. If introduced to a new cat (or small dog) companion, care and control should of course be used until she knows what is expected of her. Shes very responsive and eager to please. Rewards work better with her than punishment. (Her favorites are Snausages, or big bones packed with treats and peanut-butter!) She will also shake hands, chase a stick till the cows come home, fetch and drop it. Tara likes car rides, but may get carsick without Dramamine. This is an energetic dog who likes kids; but because shes SO BIG and a little clumsy, she might inadvertantly knock a toddler down. For this reason, shed be best with active kids 10 and older, who can play and rough-house with her. However, shes fine with one walk and fetch-session a day, and spends most of her time indoors. Although donations of all types are needed, our primary need is foster homes for our lovely dogs while they wait for their new family to find them. Fostering is an extremely rewarding experience. Vet care is paid for by our rescue, and we can even provide you with food. All YOU need to add is love and security.

The adoption process starts with the applicant filling out the adoption application. This can happen at any time during the process, before or after having met a GSD that might be the ideal companion. (It's an advantage to have a pre-approved application on file with VGSR. It should be stressed here that being pre-approved does not mean that any potential adopter can select any available dog at will and take that dog home immediately. VGSR will exercise its best judgement as to which GSD will be the best match for that specific adopter based on a number of qualifying criteria. Many GSDs that come to us are matched up with their new people very quickly because their people have been pre-approved.) The applicant then submits the application form with a non-refundable $10.00 processing fee. VGSR reviews the application, then schedules an interview and home visit during which a number of questions are asked and the home is reviewed to be sure there is a contained/safe yard, and to meet the family involved. Once the application is approved, the applicant is asked to submit a $200.00 donation to VGSR, and the adoption is completed.
