Sarge’s incredible good looks are paired with a sweet and intelligent personality. He is very friendly and affectionate – had a very easy transition to his intake home, and his foster home. He doesn’t believe in personal space though – he wants to be with you while you’re cooking, eating, doing laundry, going to the bathroom, ALL the time!! If you sit on the couch, guard your lap – he will drop a ball (or whatever toy he can get his teeth on that resembles a ball) on your lap over and over until you take the hint and play fetch.

Sarge is not for a sedentary owner – he only takes brief dozes throughout the day, in between endless games of fetch, and walks, and following his humans around and around during their daily activities. He also would not do well being home alone while his humans work all day - he gets mischievous. He loves walks, and usually asks for one every few hours. He is well mannered on his walks, and though he doesn’t exactly know what “heel” means yet, he doesn’t tug on the leash, preferring to walk around you and sometimes underfoot. Rides quietly in the car.

We are working on his commands – Sarge has excellent manners, is good while eating, doesn’t jump, doesn’t beg, is well crate trained, is house trained, and takes treats politely. However, he doesn’t really know his command words. Similar to how he is with “heel” – naturally does the behavior, but doesn’t know the word – he will calmly wait for you to throw him his ball, but isn’t so sure about “sit;” he’ll do it, but he thinks about it first.  We're working on heel, sit, stay, down, drop it, and no barking at other dogs. He’s too good to be a runner, but would really benefit from a yard with a fence (more for the ball than for Sarge) to play fetch in EVERY DAY.

Sarge is a wonderful dog, and will make a wonderful pet for a home with the time and space to devote to this loving, intelligent dog.
