Callie is a petite German Shepherd who pranced into our lives recently. She is a very sweet young girl who is full of puppy joy and happiness. She is a very smart girl who has a little training and a lot of potential. At the moment, she is underweight and I aim to get her to a good weight of 52 lbs.
Callie has a neurological condition that causes her to walk with an awkward gait. She has good strength and stamina, but when she walks, it looks like she is walking in taffy. This does not impede her progress up stairs, through the house, or in the yard. In fact, her favorite thing to do is to run like the wind around the back yard. She loves to play with balls and she can spend hours playing with her new squeaky toys. She is very smart and is picking up the rules of the house quickly. Callie showed no interest in the office cat at our vet. She is usually quiet, but will bark loudly if a stranger comes in the house or a loud noise at night startles her.
Callie has been to our local dog park and she was good with the other dogs. She even made some doggie friends who showed her a great swimming hole. She spent time visiting all the people for a pet and was fine when the little kids petted and hugged her. She did not like being close to loud dogs or dominant dogs. Callie takes well to her crate and she knows basic obedience. She has had no leash training and she pulls on her lead. We will work on that, but her adoptive family should be prepared to continue obedience training.
Because Callie is a special girl, she will only go to a home where she is either an only dog or the resident dog is extremely gentle. I think she would like to be with older children who would play nicely with her.
Update 8/16. Callie is settling into her new digs. She is becoming more confident every day. With her new found confidence comes the desire to test her limits. She is so exuberant that she sometimes jumps up on people. She will need someone who is firm and gentle to teach her how to be the best girl she can be. In the evening, Callie loves to play with her squeaky toys (the squeakier the better). When she gets tired, she puts herself to bed in her crate. Callie really needs her crate as her bedroom for comfort and security. I believe Callie would be happiest living in a home with a medium to large fenced yard. This girl loves to run, but she doesn’t like to walk on a leash (yet). To see Callie in action, check her out on our Facebook page.
