02/17/2023 - Well Miss Laila has been with us for three weeks and she has just become a sweetheart with us. She loves to get attention and very much wants to please. She has done wonderfully with the kitties and loves to roughhouse with the resident GSD. When given the opportunity, a good, hard, fast GSD run across the property is one of her favorite things. She is still very timid of strangers, men in particular. So the adopter will need to find a local trainer to help work on her confidence. Currently she understand sit and no and is figuring out bed, kennel, and wait. She isn't a big barker and will prefer to keep away from the perceived "threat", She will not be your protector - she expects you to be hers. She has shown no signs of wanting to nip or to be mouthy. She may knock you over in her enthusiasm to go in/out. We have been working on that ("wait" or "stay") and she is much better. A simple verbal before opening the door and she is good. She is putting 2 and 2 together that plowing thru you to get outside is not appropriate. She's just under 60 pounds which is a great weight for her. She isn't a velcro dog but if you get up to move she'll follow to make sure she knows where you are. Then she may go back to her kennel/bed to chill until your next movement where she'll be back to see what's going on. She hasn't really played with toys except once. She seems to prefer playing with other dogs. She has not been destructive in the house and has had no potty issues. She will pace like crazy when she needs exercise or wants to go outside. 02/07/2023 - Well it has been a little over a week and she is doing great with us and our other cats and dogs. She has a small/solid female frame at only 55 pounds, a thick, beautiful coat; eyes that sparkle; and a smile that warms your heart. We had a vet visit and while a bit nervous, she did great. At the end, she was comfortable just laying down and waiting for us to go. No concern over nipping at all, but then I did take a hotdog with me to help make the trip yummy and distract her from getting a shot. That seemed to work very well. The car ride went well too - no issues. She has definitely decided I am "OK" and loves to head butt me for attention, give me kisses and lays on my feet. If I leave the room, in typical shepherd fashion, she is up and following. She doesn't hug me around the house but she definitely keeps tabs on where I am. She loves attention and getting head scratches, stretching her legs and running across the yard, and rough-housing with the other GSD in the house. She is shy with strangers but that is to be expected. She'll need a few days to settle into any future home and her adopters will need to give her space to settle in. She would love to hop up on a couch but in our house that's a "no-no" and she gets it. She understands no and really, really wants to please. She just doesn't always understand what is expected and that makes her antsy. Training and time will help with that, so any new adopter should definitely schedule her for training classes. While she loves to play with our GSD and have the other pups around, I don't think she has to have a house mate. Just be prepared for extra attention. She has been doing wonderfully with our kitties both inside and outside and has even shared her bed with a couple of them. She has a good dose of energy, so she'll need to go for some long walks to burn some of it off. In the house she settles in nicely. Kids are an unknown but she would likely be very shy/timid initially and likely accidentally knock them over. She is not mouthy but I would say kids need to know how to behave around dogs, 01/28/2023 - This beautiful girl has literally just arrived. Keep an eye on the writeups to see how she opens up/changes over the next few weeks. Right now she is a little anxious and checking out everything - lots of nervous energy. Who can blame her with all the changes that have been going on in her life recently. Even so, she is a happy girl who enjoys a good scratch and has the makings of a cuddler. She has done well with our 4 f emale dogs and great with the kitties she's met so far. She seems nervous around kids so may not have been exposed to them previously. Tyger, our resident dog whisperer, went straight up to her and got a sniff and lick. Later in the evening, they sat next to each other on the dog bed. More to come as we get to know her. --------- $$$ - Any and all contributions would be greatly appreciated. Every $ helps VGSR to continue to save and care for these wonderful pups!
