Richard is such an affectionate shepherd.  It is difficult to imagine why someone didn’t want him.  This shaggy snuggler is liked by nearly everybody and couldn’t be more at ease around children.  He enjoys the company of other dogs and loves to receive a good scratching to his neck’s big furry main.  His temperament is perfectly suited to be a pet, park playmate, and living room sitter for a family raising children.

German shepherds tend to be a shy breed, but Richard is definitely an extrovert.  The little trouble that I’ve had with Richard comes from him being just a little too outgoing on our morning walks.  Richard is happy to meet new people and very eager to greet every strange dog that he comes across.  However, he walks well on a leash and heels again with a quick correction.  Pulling is not a major issue.

Like other shepherds, Richard reacts more protectively when strange adults come to the house.  He calms down after I’ve greeted them.  Away from home, he is out to charm everybody.  Although his exercise needs are moderate, he still needs daily walking exercise to channel his energy and to keep his joints healthy.  

Richard has shown an inclination to chase cats.  He did turn away from a cat on my verbal command, but I do not know what he would have done with it if I had not been there.  He would do better in a home without cats and should definitely not be placed with a cat that lacks its front claws.  Please inquire about Richard if you are already an approved adopter who is located in or can drive to southwest Virginia.
